The SJGA “Road to La Costa” took an exciting detour while their famous courses and resort experienced a $50 million renovation. The site was at Morgan Run Resort & Club – part of the ClubCorp family that hosted 140 student golfers competing for the 2nd Annual Callaway Scholastic Junior Golf Championships.
Fifteen year old Georgia Lacey of Torrey Pines High School bested the field with scores of 75–74 (149) to win the Girl’s Championship.
The 36 hole Boy’s Championship ended at 7:00 PM with Carlsbad HS Senior Garrett Cypher and defending champion Jay Hwang of Torrey Pines each shooting 141 (1 under par). They were crowned Co-Champions when SJGA CEO Steve Simons and Tournament Referee Coach Steve Armstrong opted for a no card-off. Monday's Grand Finale featured three separate segments of TV coverage from Fox5 TV in San Diego.
A new and special feature of this year’s event was the “Maverick Invitational – a CIF sanctioned event for 15 boys teams. Torrey Pines HS, lead by UCLA bound Jay Hwang, won with a combined 5 man 36 hole score of 744. Ramona HS placed 2nd at 764 followed by Bonita Vista 780 3rd edging out host La Costa Canyon 4th at 781.
An exciting Junior/Amateur featuring Individual Junior Boys and girls paired with adult golfers from the San Diego business and entertainment community was held on Sunday, prior to the Monday 36 hole final. Both events drew more than 200 golfers including a special Coaches Event.
